We share the government's concern for making housing affordable. However, we find it heartbreaking that family cabins may be forced into becoming long-term rentals. For many of us, short-term renting helps us cover the rising costs of owning a family cabin, which includes taxes and other living expenses. The thought of selling our cabin because we can no longer afford it makes us reminisce about the good old days of vacationing on Bowen with our family.
Are you aware of the new British Columbia Short-Term Rental ban that may eliminate Bowen Island stand-alone vacation homes? The good news is that currently, this law doesn't apply to Bowen Island due to its population being under 10,000 people. However, there's a possibility that the Bowen Island Municipality may opt into the Provincial-wide law, potentially ending short-term rentals of our vacation homes.
