Navigating the Ferry to Bowen Island: Tips for a Smooth Vacation Experience

Welcome to Bowen Island, where natural beauty meets relaxation and adventure! At our vacation rental, we understand that getting here is an essential part of your journey. While the ferry from Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove can occasionally face delays and cancellations, we’re here to help you manage the ferry experience and ensure your trip remains stress-free. Read on for valuable tips and strategies to make the most of your journey.

Check the Ferry Schedule in Advance

Before you embark on your trip to Bowen Island, always check the ferry schedule online. BC Ferries’ website is a sort of but not always reliable source for up-to-date information on departure times, cancellations, and delays. Planning your arrival around a confirmed schedule can minimize the chances of inconvenience due to unexpected changes.

TIP: We use www.BowenFerry.ca. It’s a site made specifically for Bowen Ferry travelers, and what we like is that it shows where the ferry really is on the water. Plus, very accurate scheduling; if it’s running late, you can see it right there.

The Bowen Ferry is a NON-bookable crossing:

It’s advisable to arrive at least 30 minutes early to secure your spot on the ferry, especially during busy commuter crossings, tourist seasons, and holidays. The Bowen Island Ferry is a NON-bookable ferry. First in line is first aboard.

No Return Ticket Needed, Your Fare is always a round-trip

Arrive Early, Relax, Explore, and Catch “the next one.”

On the day of your ferry journey, try to arrive at Horseshoe Bay terminal with some buffer time. If the ferry is delayed, you’ll have more time to relax at the terminal or explore nearby attractions. Horseshoe Bay offers charming cafes, scenic views, shops to keep you entertained, and a new beachside park for taking in the sun.

TIP: We come prepared to sit and relax in the ferry lineup in case we miss the ferry or it’s running late (typical for the later afternoon).

 1) bring a good book

 2) download an hour or two of videos or movies onto your phone

 3) play sudoku or another favorite game book during your wait

 4) we always pack water and a few snacks too.

ANOTHER TIP WHEN LEAVING BOWEN: We arrive at the lineup 60-45 minutes before our preferred ferry crossing to ensure we are on the next ferry. We then have the time to buy breakfast (or lunch) at the Snug Café and take it back to the car to eat while waiting for the “next one leisurely.”

A special note from the locals...they would like our visitors to know to never park or stop in the yellow cross hatch sections in the ferry lineup.

Have a Backup Plan

With the labour shortages in the ferry industry, it only takes 1 or 2 workers to call in sick, and the schedule may go into chaos. This shortage is common to Washington state ferries as well. While rare, these delays and cancellations have happened more often since 2022. It’s good to have a backup plan in case you miss a ferry.

If the ferry is canceled, BC Ferries hires Cormorant Marine for foot passengers only to get travelers and locals between Bowen and Horseshoe Bay.

Research alternative transportation options to Bowen Island, such as water taxis or private boat charters. These can be fun and unique experiences that add an extra touch of adventure to your trip.

TIP: Check out the Cormorant Marine website for their current crossings……What about renting a boat in Horseshoe Bay at Sewall’s Marina?

Be Flexible with Your Itinerary

Remember that travel plans can be subject to changes, and that’s part of the excitement of exploration. Embrace flexibility in your itinerary, and if the ferry schedule alters your plans slightly, consider it an opportunity to discover unexpected gems on Bowen Island.

TIP: Use our Bowen Island Accommodations Itinerary suggestions on our website. It’s great for early arrival or late departures to help you make the most of your Bowen adventure.

Stay Informed with Realtime Updates:

Stay connected with BC Ferries’ communication channels for real-time updates on the status of your ferry. Social media accounts and smartphone apps are often used to disseminate the latest information, ensuring you’re always in the loop.
